Aakash Tablet Version 2.0

By February 2012, an improved and more competent Aakash-2, world’s most affordable tablet PC, is expected to be launched at the same price as its previous version. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajasthan has confirmed the improvements made in Aakash-1, which was launched on October 5. HRD minister Kapil Sibal said that new version of Aakash tablet will be launched during January-February, 2012.

Aakash tablet has got an ample response internationally, when exhibited at a recent United Nations conference in Paris. Aakash has shown so much of interest among several international organizations and world leaders. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said. “Several prime ministers and ministers have evinced interest in Aakash who want it for their country in thousands,” he told media correspondents without elaborating.

The Aakash-2, based on response from more than 500 users of Aakash-1 in IITs and many other institutions, will include microprocessor of 800MHz instead of 366MHz processor. It will improve the speed of the tablet and will enable downloading videos from internet.

The RAM (Random Access Memory) of the Aakash-2 will be enhanced to 1GB from 256 MB in Aakash-1 that restricted multi-tasking.

A senior professor at IIT Rajasthan, who is leading the Aakash team, said that changes would increase the performance of the tablet and would be more competent to the existing tablet PCs in the market.

In order to make Aakash-2 smarter, the IIT Rajasthan has decided to include a built-in camera to it, to ensure video chatting facility to its users. It also will include a seven-inch touch screen for a better look.

This version is a result of feedback from IIT students, who tested Aakash-1, and claimed some of the problems of the current version, which include frequent hanging, overheating within 30 minutes, not supporting all formats, poor sound quality, and lack of ability to install software available online.

Though the Aakash-2 will be available by February 2012, to meet the government’s target of supplying it to 2 million students is still a challenge.

“We have to evolve an eco-system of several vendors and its testing by IITs and other institutes to provide an Aakash to each child by 2017 (end of 12th plan),” a senior HRD ministry official said.

As in case of Aakash-1, where companies like London based DataWind, India based Quad came together, the government believes that Aakash-2 will make a bigger collaboration

As the HRD Minister Sibal said that several international organizations and world ministers have shown interest to purchase Aakash for the children world-wide, this collaboration will be very essential. The minister, who has been marketing Aakash since its launch, also said. “There is a lot of global buzz about Aakash and we have to meet the global expectation”.

Aakash Tablet: India's cheapest tablet

The Indian made Aakash LCAD Tablet was launched on 5th October 2011! It has been called ‘Aakash’ which literally translates to ‘Sky’. The tablet has basically been developed for students and keeping this in mind the price of the tablet has been kept affordable. The tablet was developed as an initiative by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development under Government of India. The basic version would cost a student only Rs 1,500 which is around $35. This is because of the subsidies that will be offered to students and institutions using the tablet. These would be available through government organizations to students and educational institutions. The commercial version which would have a few more features than the basic version would be marginally costlier. However, the Aakash LCAD Tablet still holds the distinction of being the world’s cheapest computing device.

When we talk of the specifications provided in the tablet experts feel that they are good but could have been better. The PC tablet is not meant for gaming purpose, it has in fact been developed especially for students, and it would be right to say it meets that purpose. To understand this we must first take a look at the general specifications of the tablet.

Specifications of Aakash LCAD Tablet:
  • Developed by – Datawind
  • Cost – Rs 2,276 (approximately $50) – Approximately Rs. 1500 for students
  • Size – 190.5×118.5×15.7mm
  • Screen size – 7” resistive
  • Weight – 350gms
  • Operating System – Android 2.2(Android Marketplace is missing, instead Getjar is installed)
  • Processor -366 MHz, plus Graphics Accelerator and HD Video Co-processor
  • Memory -256 MB RAM
  • Storage –2GB Micro SD card expandable up to 32GB
  • Connectivity – 2 USB ports (full sized)
  • Battery – 2100mAh
  • Camera – External USB
  • Network – Wi-Fi Enabled
  • Web Browser – DataWind Accelerated Browser
  • Modem – Inbuilt cellular and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
The number of computer users in the world has grown manifold. In India however the percentage is less. Majority of school children do not have access to a computer. This little device will enable all students to own a computer and it can aid in improving the educational levels especially in rural areas. The tablet is affordable and is developed for the masses, yet it has everything a tablet computer must be. The small size and light weight make it convenient to carry the device around and this is just the beginning of its advantages.

Advantages of the Tablet:
  • It coalesces access to available data in one device
  • It provides different learning styles
  • Has inimitable capabilities
The one big advantage is the touch screen, which can be used to write notes directly on the tablet using the stylus. This is of immense help to students who can store the notes and access them later for reviewing and compiling the notes. The flat surface enables the tablet to be placed on a desk or any other working surface for easy use. Overall it is a good device with some incredible features and specifications.

What is SEO?

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

Some Useful terms related to SEO :
If you have a website or blog, or if you work with anything related to the Internet, you’ll certainly need to know a bit about search engine optimization (SEO).

A good way to get started is to familiarize yourself with the most common terms of the trade, and below you’ll find 20 of them. (For those who already know SEO, consider this post as a refresher!).

1. SEM: Stands for Search Engine Marketing, and as the name implies it involves marketing services or products via search engines. SEM is divided into two main pillars: SEO and PPC. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is the practice of optimizing websites to make their pages appear in the organic search results. PPC stands for Pay-Per-Click, and it is the practice of purchasing clicks from search engines. The clicks come from sponsored listings in the search results.

2. Backlink: Also called inlink or simply link, it is an hyperlink on another website pointing back to your own website. Backlinks are important for SEO because they affect directly the PageRank of any web page, influencing its search rankings.

3. PageRank: PageRank is an algorithm that Google uses to estimate the relative important of pages around the web. The basic idea behind the algorithm is the fact that a link from page A to page B can be seen as a vote of trust from page A to page B. The higher the number of links (weighted to their value) to a page, therefore, the higher the probability that such page is important.

4. Linkbait: A linkbait is a piece of web content published on a website or blog with the goal of attracting as many backlinks as possible (in order to improve one’s search rankings). Usually it’s a written piece, but it can also be a video, a picture, a quiz or anything else. A classic example of linkbait are the “Top 10″ lists that tend to become popular on social bookmarking sites.

5. Link farm. A link farm is a group of websites where every website links to every other website, with the purpose of artificially increasing the PageRank of all the sites in the farm. This practice was effective in the early days of search engines, but today they are seeing as a spamming technique (and thus can get you penalized).

6. Anchor text: The anchor text of a backlink is the text that is clickable on the web page. Having keyword rich anchor texts help with SEO because Google will associate these keywords with the content of your website. If you have a weight loss blog, for instance, it would help your search rankings if some of your backlinks had “weight loss” as their anchor texts.

7. NoFollow: The nofollow is a link attribute used by website owners to signal to Google that they don’t endorse the website they are linking to. This can happen either when the link is created by the users themselves (e.g., blog comments), or when the link was paid for (e.g., sponsors and advertisers). When Google sees the nofollow attribute it will basically not count that link for the PageRank and search algorithms.

8. Link Sculpting: By using the nofollow attribute strategically webmasters were able to channel the flow of PageRank within their websites, thus increasing the search rankings of desired pages. This practice is no longer effective as Google recently change how it handles the nofollow attribute.

9. Title Tag: The title tag is literally the title of a web page, and it’s one of the most important factors inside Google’s search algorithm. Ideally your title tag should be unique and contain the main keywords of your page. You can see the title tag of any web page on top of the browser while navigating it.

10. Meta Tags: Like the title tag, meta tags are used to give search engines more information regarding the content of your pages. The meta tags are placed inside the HEAD section of your HTML code, and thus are not visible to human visitors.

11. Search Algorithm: Google’s search algorithm is used to find the most relevant web pages for any search query. The algorithm considers over 200 factors (according to Google itself), including the PageRank value, the title tag, the meta tags, the content of the website, the age of the domain and so on.

12. SERP: Stands for Search Engine Results Page. It’s basically the page you’ll get when you search for a specific keyword on Google or on other search engines. The amount of search traffic your website will receive depends on the rankings it will have inside the SERPs.

13. Sandbox: Google basically has a separate index, the sandbox, where it places all newly discovered websites. When websites are on the sandbox, they won’t appear in the search results for normal search queries. Once Google verifies that the website is legitimate, it will move it out of the sandbox and into the main index.

14. Keyword Density: To find the keyword density of any particular page you just need to divide the number of times that keyword is used by the total number of words in the page. Keyword density used to be an important SEO factor, as the early algorithms placed a heavy emphasis on it. This is not the case anymore.

15. Keyword Stuffing: Since keyword density was an important factor on the early search algorithms, webmasters started to game the system by artificially inflating the keyword density inside their websites. This is called keyword stuffing. These days this practice won’t help you, and it can also get you penalized.

16. Cloaking. This technique involves making the same web page show different content to search engines and to human visitors. The purpose is to get the page ranked for specific keywords, and then use the incoming traffic to promote unrelated products or services. This practice is considering spamming and can get you penalized (if not banned) on most search engines.

17. Web Crawler: Also called search bot or spider, it’s a computer program that browses the web on behalf of search engines, trying to discover new links and new pages. This is the first step on the indexation process.

18. Duplicate Content: Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. You should avoid having duplicate content on your website because it can get you penalized.

19. Canonical URL: Canonicalization is a process for converting data that has more than one possible representation into a “standard” canonical representation. A canonical URL, therefore, is the standard URL for accessing a specific page within your website. For instance, the canonical version of your domain might be http://www.domain.com instead of http://domain.com.

20. Robots.txt: This is nothing more than a file, placed in the root of the domain, that is used to inform search bots about the structure of the website. For instance, via the robots.txt file it’s possible to block specific search robots and to restrict the access to specific folders of section inside the website.

Blekko: New Backlinks Checker and SEO Tool After Yahoo Site Explorer

A couple of weeks ago I read a post announcing that Yahoo! Site Explorer was gone. After that I started looking around for some alternatives for checking backlinks of my website for my SEO efforts, and one impressed me: Blekko.
If you don’t know the story, Blekko is a search engine which the goal of filtering spam from its results. They do that by using a list of trusted sites and then crawling the web from those sites as starting points.

Another difference is the use of slashtags, which help users to filter and customize their search queries.

It sure would take more than that to make me switch away from Google as far as searching goes, but Blekko is adding a really nice set of tools for SEOs and webmasters.

For example, if you search for a domain name followed by “/SEO” you’ll get a pretty detailed report about that site.

Information includes total number of backlinks, origin of those backlinks, possible duplicate content around the web, number of pages indexed and so on.

As for the number of backlinks listed Blekko has one of the most accurate counts I have seen in a while, so check it out.

10 Tips To Promote Your Blog With Email Marketing

Email marketing is not the exclusive territory of the electronics superstores or the vitamin purveyors, and bloggers can leverage email newsletters to build their audiences by using many of the same tactics and techniques mastered by the major etailers.

But if you’ve got a great blog and you’re at a loss on how to promote it via email marketing, you’re not alone. Here are the top 10 tips to efficiently promote your blog through the remarkable power and efficiency of email marketing.

1. Get permission – It’s not sufficient to capture email addresses here, there, and everywhere to slam onto your subscription list. You either have received formal double opt-in archived permission from your subscriber or you’re spamming. It’s that simple.

2. Set expectations – You have to be very clear as to what type of content your newsletter will contain and how often they will receive it. If they’re expecting a monthly newsletter on your pet supply blog and instead they end up getting daily emailed exhortations to buy antidepressant pharmaceuticals, you’re on the fast track to spam reports and blacklists.

3. Be consistent – Take your time to come up with a coherent identity for your email newsletters which matches your blog. It’s not enough to simply copy over the logo, but everything should be synchronous: from the color scheme of the layout to the writing style of the email copy.

4. Mobile rules – There are various hard and fast rules which must be adhered to in order to suit the growing portion of your audience which reads your emails on the proliferating plethora of mobile web-enabled devices. Do your research on how to best design emails for mobiles and apply what you learn.

5. Keep it short – You wouldn’t write a 7,200 word blog on the Disney World vacation plans of a tech CEO, so you shouldn’t bog down your email newsletters with excessive coverage of the insignificant. Keep your email copy focused and edit it all down to the shortest word count it can possibly be while still making the point.

6. Call them to action – Many bloggers engage email subscribers in a strictly informative manner without bothering to drive that precious traffic back to the blog. Link back to your blog every reasonable chance you have. After all, that’s the reason you’re doing an email marketing campaign in the first place!

7. Facilitate the unsubscribe
– You’ve gone through a lot of trouble to get that subscriber, so why should you make it easy for them to leave your list? If you don’t prominently feature an unsubscribe link which is immediately honored, not only are you violating the US Federal CAN-SPAM Act, but you’re just begging your subscriber to plunk you in the junk folder or file a spam complaint.

8. Check through emulators – There are various services which allow you to see your email the way it will be viewed in a broad variety of browsers and devices. Don’t ever let your email go out until you’ve reviewed these different perspectives or you may find that all of the readers using iPhones or Firefox might be seeing your email as a post-earthquake mosaic.

9. Segment & segment some more – There is literally no limit to how far you can segment your list. You can separate subcategories by behavior, geography, demographics, or any other bit of information you can gather about your subscribers, then custom-tailor the content to fit. If you’re sending the same newsletter to your entire list you’re applying a transparently generic strategy that is essentially counter-productive.

10. Ask for feedback – Be open to both positive and negative comments as you solicit every form of feedback your subscriber base will provide. Learn from each and every comment and use the feedback to fine tune your marketing efforts.

Email marketing can be the most successful way to drive traffic to your blog and ensure that you maintain a vibrant and engaged readership. Master email marketing and watch your Technorati rating soar.

W3 Total Cache WordPress Plugin

I am a bit stubborn when it comes to changing old habits. The same is true for technologies I use, WordPress plugins included. As such I have been using WP Super Cache for as long as I can remember, and I always thought it was a great plugin.

Then around one year ago I started hearing about a new cache plugin, called W3 Total Cache. I didn’t bother to actually test it, as WP Super Cache was doing its homework.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of my sites started to open slowly due to the amount of traffic they were receiving. After exchanging some emails with the HostGator support folks they said I should try W3 Total Cache.

I did, and really surprised me. I still think WP Super Cache is a great plugin, but W3 Total Cache is even greater. The difference in loading times after I installed it was visible.

On top of that the plugins comes with more customization features, including the ability to cache database calls, to use server accelerator plugins, to integrate a CDN solution if you have one and so on.

I’ll be switching from WP Super Cache to W3 Total Cache on all my wordpress sites now, and I recommend you to do the same if you are not using it yet.

How to secure facebook account

How to secure Facebook? Facebook is the top social network in the world now, where most of us has at least an account associated with it. This web application is built in a way where everyone knows how to use the entire application in just hours but what about its security?

1. Create a strong password for authentication
Passwords can be easily broken by brute-force, if you choose to use a short and simple password. If you don’t have a strong password to protect your account, then whatever security guides that you apply below is not going to do any better. The key here is to have a long and complicated password where complexity is the combination of lower case, upper case, numeric and special characters like symbols.

2. Enable secure HTTPS connection
Simple HTTP connection is totally outdated. It can be tapped and extremely vulnerable to man in the middle attack. As a result, Facebook offers the HTTPS connection so that all the data submitted from your computer to the Facebook server is completely encrypted. Even if there is a man in the middle who taps your connection, all the person gets is gibberish data.

3. Enable login notification
If you are really unlucky where your Facebook credentials are stolen and being used to login, enabling the login notification will keep you notified about this event. By knowing that someone is using your Facebook account without your permission, you can immediately kick them out and set a new password so that they can never login anymore. This feature is extremely good where you can enable notifications from both email and mobile SMS.

4. One Time Password in login approval
One Time Password is a two factor authentication method where you can enable all logins from unknown devices to use One Time Password to ensure that only you can login from an unknown device. By making use of this, there are only two ways for the hacker to use your Facebook identity. One is to steal your recognized device which is your computer or smartphone. The other way is to steal your mobile phone to get the one time password.

5. Logging out from Facebook
Though it might seems to be the easiest, but it is the action that most people forget to perform. Whenever most people are done with checking and replying messages in Facebook, they just close the web browser and walk away from the computer assuming that the session is logged out. Unfortunately, that is a big gamble and not all the web browsers works the same. Some still retain your previous session even though the web browser is closed. Remember to logout. However, now you can also manage your sessions wherein you can perform a remote logout to the computer in which you had just closed the web browser without proper logout.

Facebook introduces Translation of Status Updates and Comments

Just when I was browsing my Facebook timeline this morning, I found something cool which was giving me an option to translate a status update. It was something I never seen before and maybe you can call it as a new feature by Facebook but whatever it is, I found it really cool as it allows you to translate the status update if it is in a language which is not being understood by you.

I was fortunate enough to click it and present you how it looks like. Below is the pic of this new feature of Facebook allowing you to translate the updates.

If you hover your mouse on this option, it will give you a pop-over which will say “Translation by Bing” so it definitely means Facebook is now giving Bing Translation integration with this feature.

When I tried translating this update, unfortunately I couldn’t translate this thing as it the update is actually a Hindi update written in English. Below is what I got when I tried translating this thing.

Had this update been in Hindi, I am pretty much sure I could have get it translated. As I had this option only in this status update on my timeline, maybe Facebook is still testing it and rolling out but if this comes, it will be a boon for some to get it translated the updates quickly. The reason why I’ve mentioned “comments” in the title of this article is because I read a tweet few days back that Facebook is going to introduce this feature for comments as well.

That’s it for now. Let me know if you get any updates on this thing. Cheers.

Advantages of Google AdSense URL and custom channels

One disadvantage of adding Google AdSense directly from Blogger LAYOUT is that you cannot use custom channel to track the performance of your ad units. Fortunately, there is also URL channels which tracks the total earnings from a particular blog (URL).

Now if you track the custom channels for AdSense units generated directly from Google AdSense, then by simple subtraction of the total earnings from custom channels from the total earnings for the blog (URL) you can get what is left, that is earnings from the AdSense units inserted directly from the Blogger LAYOUT placed after each each post. This was how I was able to get a Google AdSense channels report for this blog which is my main blog for bloggers.
